In the winter of 2007, I signed up to take an evening night school credit for high school chemistry that was to be used for admission into university. I inquired at FutureSkills which is a private high school. I let them know my situation at the time which was that I worked full-time from 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and could only attend classes if they were after 6pm on weekdays or sometime on weekends. They confirmed they would offer night school classes for this subject for the upcoming semester. After they posted the next semester’s schedule with exact times and days of their classes, I signed up for the high school chemistry class I was interested in and paid all tuition fees. To my surprise, two days before classes were to begin, they emailed me to inform me that the chemistry class schedule was changed to 3pm and on different days of the week. I asked them for a refund of fees as they were aware of my situation. They said that I could sign up for another semester or class that could fit my schedule. I let them know that I was not interested in any other classes and was going to sign up for chemistry class at another school.I told them that I thought changing the schedule with such short notice before classes were to start was not right and the fact that they did not want to give me a full refund of fees was robbery. I also told them of the opportunity cost and inconvenience this caused me because now it was probably too late for me to sign up at any other school. They then said they will give me my money back minus $100 “admin. fee”. When I complained to the owner, he said that this $100 “admin. fee” was stated in the agreement I signed and also stated in the agreement was a clause that said they could change their schedule at anytime before or after the start of classes. Well the owner and school got me on that because it was stated in the contract, so basically they got to keep a $100 of my money for doing nothing. Before I left minus my $100, I asked the owner whether he thought it was -fair- that he could take a $100 admin. fee because he changed the schedule on his students within 2 days before class. He did not answer the question. I told him I would not leave the office until he answered yes or no. He avoided the question and went back to hiding the red tape saying it’s in the contract I signed, but eventually answered yes it’s not fair. So I asked him why he does it and he didn’t respond, he just had a guilty look on his face.Just a warning to everyone who is interested specifically with FutureSkills or maybe another private school.
