Complaint: I was hired to work here a few months ago and was appauled by the entire process that employees and customers alike have to go through when doing business with the owner of this deli. After responding to a craigslist ad for the job, I got a call from the owner one night asking me to come in for an interview the next day. I went to the deli prepared for an interview and before even saying u201chellou201d the owner gave me an apron and put me to work. Those first few days were a disaster, after preparing the food for the day, he had me working the cash register. Customers had to wait 45 minutes for their subs to be made because he was the only one working, not trusting me to do so much as put the sandwiches in the toaster-oven. He told me to tell customers it would only take 15 minutes, even though the truth was it was going to take upwards of an hour for them to get their sandwich. The owner also told me not to inform customers that if they buy a drink, they get a bag of chips for free, or vise versa, that if they buy a bag of chips, they get a drink for free, so customers were only getting a drink when the menu said that with the purchase of either they get the other. In between using the cash register, my other job was to act like I was cleaning the tables with a wet rag that had absolutely no soap or anything on it. He told me to act like I was washing off the rag each time I was done with it just so that people thought it was actually sanitary. Another job he assigned me with was walking around with a broom and dust tray sweeping up ants that were all over the restaurant. At lunch, he informed me that I could have soup to eat, but no sandwiches, that I could eat the expired potato chips, and that I could also have one soda out of the soda fountain so long as no customers were around. Of course it was nice to have a lunch provided, but its not like he gave me the option to leave for lunch either. After a week of working there I came in for my check and he informed me that the tips I had been receiving at the cash register were not mine because I was u201cin trainingu201d, even though I personally thanked each person who had given me a tip. He paid me in cash, without ever even knowing my full name so I know it must have been illegal, and the wages, without tips, turned out to be about $7 an hour. Needless to say I quit and found a job elsewhere. This man will break the law if it helps his business, and I canu2019t even imagine what other employees have had to go through before me.
