We contacted Coastal Chimney Sweeps after a 22 year old chimney cap blew off and our fireplace started leaking. We don’t use our fireplace, but needed to fix the leak. We wanted to replace the cap or permanently seal the chimney. | Thomas Lovell from Coastal Chimney Sweeps gave us both options to fix the problem. He said that for the same price, he could either replace the cap or seal the top. Since we have had a problem with wasps building nests in the chimney and getting into the house, he suggested sealing the chimney. He said it would a permanent fix, and that we wouldn’t have to worry about the wind blowing it off – it would be screwed into the chimney wall. We chose to go with the seal, because we wanted a lasting solution. Mr. Lovell and his son did the work on August 17, 2017. We paid him for his work that day. | On October 22, 2017, two months later, we heard the sound of dripping water in the fireplace. We looked in to see it full of water. My husband used a mirror to look up at the chimney – the seal was gone, of course – and there was loose adhesive around the top of the chimney. Apparently glue, not screws, were used to “permanently” attach the seal, which was a thin peice of sheet metal. | We contacted Coastal Chimney twice, and both times Lovell said that he was not responsible – “it was the wind”. He would not come and look and the problem or discuss it further except to say he would replace the seal, but we would have to pay the full amount again. Needless to say, we didn’t take him up on it. | Sorry to see such toal disregard for quality of work and customer service from a small family business in a small town. There are plenty of other companies in and around the area. Don’t take your chances with this outfit. You can’t see what they are doing up there, so you really don’t know until something goes wrong. When it does, they don’t stand by their work.
