Complaint: Casey’s of Walled is a nice place to go if you are looking to have a few drinks, fairly priced, nice atmosphere. A group of us used to like to dine there or just go in for a few drinks. Then they started having a Wednesday euchre tournament. When I heard about the tournament, since I like to play euchre, I started to play there on Wednesday night. Then I brought someone with me and so on. After about 3-4 weeks of watching what was going on, it was clear to observe that Cheryl, the elderly lady that runs the euchre tournament, is running this euchre tournment for her own profit. And it’s a real shame because it is a nice place to dine and have a good time but it really reflects badly on Casey’s. When I received the type of treatment I did because of a lousy $50-$70 euchre tournament, I won’t go back. If you walk in there on Wednesday night, you will see this section of ‘unique’ people, that show up this one night of the week and are at each others’ throats for this small euchre jackpot. And I only use the word ‘unique’ as another way of saying, ‘people that don’t look like the ordinary people you might see in a bar at 8-9 pm in the evening’. They are there for euchre and nothing else. The first time I went there to play euchre, I won. I was happy, we both had a good time. After that, I could tell I was not welcome any more. Cheryl circulated rumors that I was cheating; heaven forbid someone come into her bar and actually WIN money. I didn’t bother anyone, didn’t act inapproriate, nothing out of line. I am a mature business man and I just wanted to play euchre. She had no reason to act like a child and spread a rumor like one as well. I’m not one of these people that HAS to win and acts like a jerk if I don’t. I am, however, competitive on friendly level and enjoy winning as would anyone. Doing business with a lot of people in the Walled Lake community, I value my reputation. So to insinuate that I would cheat at a lousy card game is like telling people I would cheat them in a business transaction as well. Upon going there for a short period of time, I won again, it got worse. They would alter my score in their little laptop computer that they keep a tally with. I haven’t been there in some time but I have learned as of late that this happens to anyone that wins money there. When I ran into the fourth person in recent weeks that has made the same claims, I decided to post this complaint. They still hold euchre there, to the best of my knowledge, but you will notice it’s all older people, handicapped people, etc. Basically it’s anyone that doesn’t have a chance of winning is welcome to attend. I know they used to get about 8 tables of people, now they get 3-4, and that’s the reason why. We tried to overlook the pettiness in the beginning but quickly kept observing what was going on and decided to find another hang-out. Cheryl, has this little euchre tournament set up for the sole purpose of pocketing a few lousy bucks. If you want to cheat as this lady does, that’s one thing, but to represent a business just isn’t right and I find it hard to believe that the owner isn’t bothered by this. I’ve heard the owner is a nice guy and I really wish I didn’t harbor the feelings I do about this establishment. Anyone looking to play euchre on Wednesday night in the Walled Lake area, I would recommend George Murphys in Livonia, located in the Fox Creek Golf Course Country and they play every OTHER wednesday or Father Kramer’s Knights of Columbus in Center Line/Warren at I-696 and Van d**e, this one is ran well and has nice winnings for the serious euchre players. As is to be expected, you will run into some nasty people at these places too from time to time but they certainly run a lot better and they play fair. The rules are posted on the wall, there are several people keep track of scores, the tables and partners are already set up. And, as I mentioned already, it’s a shame because my wife and friends and I used to go there and have fun, enjoy a few drinks. And now, not only do we not go to their euchre tournament on Wednesday but we don’t go there any other day either. We prefer Fibber McGees at Pontiac Trail and Beck. They have a new owner and the place is always hopping. Or, the Library Pub on Haggerty is always fun to visit from time to time. This all might sound petty to people that read this. However, when you spend five bucks for a little fun and a chance to win a little money, then find out your chances are limited because the person running it is cheating. Or downplaying your good luck and fortune for winning by accusing you of cheating; it can become somewhat of a bitter feeling.
